Genetically modified products are the products which contain or received by the use of genetically modified organism or GMO.
Genetically modified organism (GMO) — the live organism, whose genotype was artificially changed with the help of methods of gene engineering. Such changes, as a rule, are made with the scientific or economic aims.
In many cases the use of transgene plants strongly raises productivity. There is an opinion of different countries whose leader is the USA that with this number of population only GMP can relieve the world of a hunger threat. In some countries creation, manufacture, application of production with the use of GMP are the subject to state regulation. Including Russia, where the use GMP is forbidden, except for investigated and approved to application some kinds of transgene products. What is genetically changed product? It is when the gene of one organism is allocated in the laboratory changes in a cage of another.
Are they harmful? When we begin to talk about genetically modified products, the imagination creates in our minds some terrible mutants. There are legends about aggressive superseding from the natural transgene plants which America throws in trustful Russia,and they are deep-rooted. But, maybe, we don’t just have the information? Opinions of scientists about safety of genetically modified power supply disperse. There is no scientific fact against the use of transgene products.Their supporters consider that GMP are harmless and even have advantages. The main argument which is used for protection of GMP by scientific experts of all world, says: “DNA which is from genetically modified organisms is as safe as any other DNA which is in food. Daily together with meal we use alien DNA and while mechanisms of protection of our genetic material do not allow in essential degree to influence on us”.
In the same time, some experts consider that there is a risk of release of astable kind of plants, transfer of the set properties by weeds the main thing – potential danger to biological objects, to health of the person by carrying over of the built in gene to microflora, of intestines or formation from the modified fibers under the influence of normal enzymes, the so-called minor components, capable to make negative impact. In Russia in difference to the USA which for a long time mark GMO goods, as always, there is our own way. In spite of the fact that in Russia there is the Federal law "About state regulation in the sphere of gene-engineering activity" that includes obligatory instructions on packings of a foodstuff information about the use of gene-modified components, the problem has not yet lost its sharpness. Russian traders don't hurry with the marking of production in spite of the fact that such Federal law is given.
It is important to know! To find out, whether the product contains a modified gene, it is possible only with the help of difficult laboratory researches. In 2002 the Russian Ministry of Health has managed obligatory marks of the products which contains more than five percent of genetically modified source. That means each packing of a product should have a sign «Contains GMP», or «does not contain GMP». In real life there are no marks at all. Considering that goods and components which contains GMO, considerably reduce the price of a product and its cost price by manufacture,and there is no hope that it will make an interest on our manufacturers about our health, instead of the profit. In spite of the fact that today there is no deficiency of products, and it is possible to buy everything, probably it is not necessary to refuse so fast from experience of our mums and grandmothers, from the sphere of country gardening, sowing once blossoming and fructifying beds with green Canadian grass. In the end, to keep our health and the health of our future generations, there is maybe an aim to get your own summer residence, or a small house in village, at least for the summer period, and as much as possible not to depend on the obscure products imposed to us.
