Chor (russian Хор) is an urban settlement at the Khabarovsk Territory (Russian Federation) with the population of 10.391 (on 14.10.2010).

Geographical location

The settlement is located in the Ussuri lowland in the Far East of the Russian Federation on the right bank of the Ussuri feeder, Chor. It's about 80 km (50 miles) to the south from Khabarovsk. Chor is one of the many settlements in the Laso district and placed 12 km (7,5 miles) from the district center Pereyaslavka.

History

Chor was found in the end of 19th century, in 1897. Meanwhile there was a railroad from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok built, which is today a part of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. Also this place is known for it's great bridge over the Chor river, which became the name of the settlement.

But some native nations, who were living here for a long time, especially the Nanais, called this place Chor, what is translated from the Nanay as the Devil.

Chor was developed very fast and by 1938 it got the status of the urban settlement.

Famous people who were born here

Sergey Vladimirovich Tchepikov (30.01.1967) is a former Soviet-Russian biathlete and cross country skier who competed at six Winter Olympics, five in biathlon (1988, 1992, 1994, 2002 and 2006) and one in cross country skiing (1998). His last Olympic performance was a silver medal in the 4 x 7.5 km relay at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
